Architecture of Spain - Review
Architecture is a kind of art that people can marvel at without buying entrance tickets or queuing to the museums – and even without leaving their car or train compartments. So whether you are on tour around Spain, have come to arrange some business matters here or travel Spain with deliberation to study its architectural and artistic traditions, the beauty of the surroundings is something you won’t avoid.
The architecture of Spain is closely connected with the land’s history, and while the latter was rich and diversified, be sure that your must-see list will be full with sightseeings and attractions.
The Celts and the Iberians, the Romans and the Visigoths, and most importantly, the Moors and the Christians have all left deep trails in architectural heritage of Spain.
Again, historically, the South of the Peninsula saw greater influence of the Arabs, and the North was more exposed to European trends, so some of the best samples of Moorish architecture are the Mosque of Cordoba and Granada’s Alhambra, while Navarra and Aragon attract travelers with their Romanesque churches and other structures.
Some other styles in architecture of Spain that should be mentioned here are the imposing Gothic vividly demonstrated in cathedrals of Toledo, Leon, and Sevilla (this one is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world); its subdivisions, Mediterranean or Catalan that you can study in the Cathedrals of Barcelona and Palma; and Plateresque that evolved from the decadent Gothic in the course of time and got as many Renaissance constructions built in Spain that they only yield to Italy in number.
The queer blending of the world’s two major religions resulted in springing of a new style, the so called Mudejar, presenting a combination of Muslim and Christian styles seen in the churches and the Castle of San Servando in Toledo, etc…
When you travel Spain you’ll also find a lot of Baroque buildings here, including the Cathedral of Cordoba which is alone a good reason to travel Spain.
And of course our brief review on architecture of Spain would not be complete without saying a few words about the modern Spanish genius, Antonio Gaudi. If Barcelona is considered one of Spain’s greatest tourist attractions for its beautiful architecture, it is to a large extent due to the profusion of the master’s works like Sagrada Familia, Guell Parque and more.
In a nutshell, when you travel Spain, it may happen so that you lack time, money or chance to get to know the land’s architecture, but you will never lack choices to draw a most interesting itinerary through the best places in Spain!
