Weather in Spain - Sunny Impressions

Tourists who travel Spain have much to discover all year round. The third-largest country of Europe, situated on the Iberian peninsula only 13,5 km away from Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar, and surrounded by two seas and an ocean, Spain enjoys a varied climate so you won't be bored with weather in Spain while moving around the country. Skiing in one part of the land and sun-bathing in another in the same month – where else could you find such adventures as in Spain?

The climate puzzle consists of three main pieces, namely Mediterranean, continental and maritime patterns.

Mediterranean Spain is hot, dry and sunny in summer and mild and warm in winter. The Northern part of the coast however sees occasional rains, especially toward winter. In the South, scorching winds from Africa are moderated by sea breezes. Spring and summer are the time for the beach, and Andalusia will rejoice vacationers who travel Spain with sunshine lasting for more than 300 days a year! But if you choose to travel Spain in autumn, resorts of Costa del Sol, Barcelona and Costa Blanca will still be open for you to enjoy the gentle sun. As the weather in Spain becomes colder, Sierra Nevada invites skiers to its runs and trails from December to May!

Central Spain is real sultry in summer, too, though the temperatures vary from day to day. A proverb observes that the weather in Spain provides "9 months of winter and 3 months of hell". Indeed, winters are freezing and windy around Madrid, Toledo and Salamanca. And as for the summer months, it is not by pure accident that the locals all try to move to the coastal areas! However, most of the museums and other attractions will still be open for foreign visitors who are heat-resistant enough to travel Spain at this time.

Northern and North-Western parts of Spain are very cloudy and damp with only 8 hours of sunshine per day in summer. Galicia, for example, “enjoys” permanent wet conditions. Temperatures are lower than in other parts of Spain, too. However, the coast is somewhat warmed up by the Atlantic ocean. Mountains can get covered with snow in October, but some of the peaks remain snow-capped all year round. The Spanish Pyrenees have sixteen resorts that can offer skiers just about anything they can think of!
