The people that settled on the territory of today's Spain included
Celts, Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, and Moors. It is no wonder thus,
that when you travel Spain you'll come across such an astonishing
diversity of cultural traditions. For example, the Spanish language
witnesses to the great influence of the Roman rule, when Spain was the
Empire's province.
Another deep trace in the life of the Spaniards was left by the
5-century-long Moorish domination, with the remnants of Islamic
culture most obvious in the South of the Peninsula.
Though the land was prospering under the Muslims, it was considered by
the Christian world that their religion was evil and so the painful
process of re-christianization started. This efforts to convert Jews
and Moors to the Christianity resulted in the terrible tortures of
Spanish Inquisition hounding thousands of
“heretics” to
death.
Some time later, as Christopher Columbus returned home having
discovered the New World, rivers of precious metals and other resources
flew to Spain bringing economical prosperity and political wealth with
them, and marking the beginning of the Golden Age of the Spanish Empire.
In the course of time, however, power and prosperity of Spain under the
Habsburgs and Bourbons gradually came to naught due to the continuing
wars and some other internal problems, and Spain lost its colonies one
by one.
The beginning of the 20th century brought economical crisis and serious
social disturbances, so the land had military dictate established for a
decade. This restless century also saw the Spanish Civil War and the
two World Wars that couldn't but have influenced the situation in the
country gravely.
Nevertheless, subsequent attempts of improving relations with the
international community yielded positive results and things began to
get better. As Spain joined the European Union, the European Community
and the NATO, its secure world position was regained and today the
Kingdom of Spain is a developed democratic state with economy ranking
8th in the world.
